Trivia & production notes
- Joss Whedon told Marvel Studios that screenwriter Zak Penn's initial script draft was unsalvageable, requiring him to start the screenplay from scratch rather than revise the existing work.
- Whedon wrote an alternate version of the script featuring The Wasp as a major character and wanted Zooey Deschanel to play her, preparing for the possibility that Scarlett Johansson might not be available.
- Marvel began filming The Avengers before either Thor or Captain America: The First Avenger had been released to audiences, creating significant risk if those films were poorly received.
- Screenwriter Zak Penn initially wanted to reduce Thor's role in The Avengers script because he doubted the character could work on film, but changed his mind after Chris Hemsworth was cast in the role.
- Whedon considered adding Ezekiel Stane, son of Iron Man villain Obadiah Stane, as a second antagonist because he worried that Tom Hiddleston's Loki alone might seem insufficient to challenge Earth's mightiest heroes.
- Samuel L. Jackson signed a nine-picture deal with Marvel Entertainment in February 2009, which included playing Nick Fury in The Avengers and other films.
- Marvel Studios developed The Avengers with a strategy of releasing solo films for each major character first to establish their identities before bringing them together in a crossover.
- Joss Whedon and screenwriter Zak Penn shared final screenplay credit, though Whedon fought for sole credit and expressed frustration about having to share the credit.
- Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner after Marvel Studios decided not to bring Norton back for The Avengers.
- Marvel initially planned to release The Avengers in July 2011 but pushed the date back to May 4, 2012, nearly a full year later, following Scarlett Johansson's casting confirmation.
