- Ben Affleck developed a solo Batman film for the DC Extended Universe starting in 2014, writing the first draft with Geoff Johns by March 2016, before abandoning the project due to script concerns and personal reservations about directing.
- Matt Reeves took over as director in February 2017 and repositioned The Batman as a noir film focused on Batman's detective work early in his career, completely separating it from the DC Extended Universe.
- Robert Pattinson's casting as Batman in May 2019 initially sparked backlash from some fans.
- The Batman is the longest Batman film ever made and the third-longest superhero film overall, behind only Zack Snyder's Justice League and Avengers: Endgame.
