Trivia & production notes
- Ron Howard's first choice to play Robert Langdon was Bill Paxton, who had to turn down the role because he was starting work on the HBO series Big Love.
- Ricky Gervais declined an offer to play Remy Jean because he feared it would damage the film.
- Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman had previously collaborated with director Ron Howard on A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man.
- The Louvre's interior was reconstructed inside Pinewood Studios' 007 Stage for the opening sequence.
- A photorealistic silicone body was created for the Louvre murder scene, with lighting used to obscure sensitive areas—the same technique employed on NCIS.
- Pinewood's newly opened Underwater Stage, which had been in development for four years, maintained water at exactly 30 degrees Celsius for crew comfort during underwater filming.
- Westminster Abbey and the Church of Saint-Sulpice both denied permission to film on their premises, forcing the production to use Lincoln and Winchester cathedrals instead and digitally recreate the Saint-Sulpice interior.
- Lincoln Cathedral's bell remained silent for the first time since World War II during filming in August 2005, and a 61-year-old nun named Sister Mary Michael spent 12 hours on her knees praying outside the cathedral in protest.
- Winchester Cathedral used its location fee to fund an exhibition and lecture series designed to debunk the book's claims.
- The film's teaser trailer premiered a year before the film's release and before principal photography had even begun.
