Trivia & production notes
- Christopher Nolan initially had no plans to make a sequel to Batman Begins despite the film's success, and neither he nor longtime producer Emma Thomas had previously worked on a sequel.
- David Goyer developed an outline for two sequels, but Nolan struggled with how to continue the story while maintaining consistency with the grounded, realistic tone of Batman Begins.
- The joker playing card scene at the end of Batman Begins was designed to communicate that Batman's belief his war on crime would be temporary was fundamentally flawed.
- David Goyer and Christopher Nolan deliberately avoided making overtly political statements about terrorism and the war on terror, believing such a direct approach would undermine the story's ability to resonate with audiences.
- The Nolans chose not to give the Joker an origin story or character arc because they believed this made him scarier, and they later discovered they had inadvertently written him similarly to his first appearance in Batman #1 from 1940.
- Jonathan Nolan spent six months developing the story into a draft screenplay and then an additional two months refining it before his brother Christopher finished directing The Prestige.
- Heath Ledger's casting was criticized by some in the industry, but executive producer Charles Roven stated he was the only actor seriously considered for the role.
- Heath Ledger secluded himself in a hotel room for about a month reading comic books to develop the Joker character, and later created a "Joker diary" over four months containing images and elements he believed would resonate with the role.
- Maggie Gyllenhaal replaced Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes because Holmes chose to star in the crime comedy Mad Money instead.
- Aaron Eckhart's portrayal of Harvey Dent was influenced by Robert F. Kennedy, particularly his idealistic approach to fighting organized crime.
