Trivia & production notes
- Director David Frankel was initially hired despite having made only one feature film, Miami Rhapsody, and episodes of television shows, but he secured the job by giving the producer extensive notes and laying out a detailed vision for the film.
- Four different screenwriters worked on the script, with Aline Brosh McKenna's draft ultimately striking the balance between producers and director by focusing the story on the conflict between Andy and Miranda rather than taking it in a typical romantic comedy direction.
- Meryl Streep was almost passed over for the role of Miranda because people doubted she could be funny, but her casting ultimately helped the studio greenlight the film despite Anna Wintour's resistance to the project.
- Streep negotiated her salary from an initial offer she considered too low up to around $4 million, which allowed 20th Century Fox to greenlight the film.
- Anne Hathaway actively pursued the role of Andy by tracing 'Hire me' in the sand of a zen garden on an executive's desk during a meeting about the project.
- Emily Blunt was discovered for her role when a casting agent taped her reading lines elsewhere on the Fox lot after her audition for Eragon, and she read them in her own British accent which interested the director.
- Stanley Tucci agreed to play Nigel just three days before shooting began, after the filmmakers had auditioned fashion commentators Simon Doonan and Robert Verdi as research for whoever they would ultimately cast in the role.
- Production designer Jess Gonchor based Miranda's office design on an online photo of Anna Wintour's actual office, including details like an octagonal mirror, and Wintour subsequently redecorated her real office after the film's release.
- Principal photography took place over 57 days starting in September 2005, and after six weeks the director persuaded the studio to budget for limited shooting in Paris, though Meryl Streep did not travel there to save money.
- The Dengel twins, who played Miranda's daughters, fielded questions for three years about whether the Harry Potter advance copies they held in the film were real, then auctioned the prop books along with their costumes for $586 to benefit the Dress for Success charity.
