Trivia & production notes
- Andrew Neiderman sold the film rights to Warner Bros. by pitching it as a story about a New York law firm that exclusively represents guilty clients and never loses a case.
- Joel Schumacher originally planned to direct the film with Brad Pitt as the lead and envisioned a subway sequence modeled after the circles of hell from Dante's Divine Comedy, but the project collapsed without an actor cast as Satan.
- The O.J. Simpson murder trial's controversial outcome provided renewed momentum to revive the film project with a $60 million budget.
- Keanu Reeves turned down $11 million to star in Speed 2 in order to appear in The Devil's Advocate, then took a significant pay cut so the producers could meet Al Pacino's salary demands.
- Al Pacino initially rejected the Satan role three times due to finding the character clichéd, and even suggested Robert Redford and Sean Connery for the part before eventually accepting it.
- To prepare for the Devil role, Pacino studied the 1941 film The Devil and Daniel Webster, read Paradise Lost and Dante's Inferno, and observed Walter Huston's performance as Mr. Scratch.
- The filmmakers cleared New York's 57th Street of all people and vehicles at 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday to film a scene of Keanu Reeves walking through the normally crowded location.
- Donald Trump's penthouse in Trump Tower was lent to the production for use as a character's residence.
- The climactic morphing effect of John Milton transforming into Lucifer combined life masks of Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino in 1997, and Pacino as he appeared in The Godfather, using a life mask that makeup artist Dick Smith had created in the 1970s.
- Creating the animated sculpture effect of ballerinas moving in water took three months and cost $2 million, representing 40 percent of the entire special effects budget.
