- Jean-Claude Van Damme rejected a role in The Expendables because he felt the character lacked substance and development.
- Wesley Snipes was originally written for the role of Hale Caesar but couldn't leave the United States due to tax issues and court restrictions.
- Terry Crews ultimately played Hale Caesar after Forest Whitaker had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts and 50 Cent was brought in as a replacement.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger was first offered the role of Mr. Church but chose to play fellow mercenary leader Trench instead.
- Kurt Russell's agent declined a role in the film, citing that Russell was not interested in ensemble acting at that time.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis filmed their scene together without compensation, according to Stallone's Blu-ray commentary.
- The film was shot in Brazil and Louisiana with principal photography beginning in Rio de Janeiro in March 2009.
