Trivia & production notes
- Dustin Hoffman was originally cast in Mel Brooks' The Producers but begged to be released from the role so he could audition for The Graduate instead.
- Producer Joseph E. Levine initially mistook Dustin Hoffman for a messenger boy when they first met during casting.
- Anne Bancroft and Katharine Ross, who played mother and daughter, were only eight years apart in age, while Bancroft and Hoffman differed by less than six years.
- Despite earning $20,000 for his role, Dustin Hoffman netted only $4,000 after taxes and temporary housing costs, then collected $55 per week in New York State unemployment benefits while living in a West Village apartment.
- Robert Redford was tested for the role of Benjamin but director Mike Nichols felt he lacked the underdog quality the character required.
- Charles Grodin turned down the role of Benjamin twice—first because of a $500/week salary offer, and again because he felt he couldn't prepare adequately for a screen test overnight.
- Gene Hackman was initially cast as Mr. Robinson but was fired after a few days of rehearsals and replaced by Murray Hamilton.
- Every major film studio rejected the project, with producers saying they hated the source material and didn't find it funny.
- Director Mike Nichols hired Buck Henry as screenwriter despite Henry having no formal writing background and experience primarily in improvised comedy.
- Many exterior shots depicting Berkeley's campus were actually filmed at USC in Los Angeles instead.
