• The 2013 film was the fifth adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, following a now-lost 1926 version, a 1949 film, a 1974 film, and a 2000 TV movie.
• Baz Luhrmann contemplated shooting the film in 3D while attending the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2011 but ultimately decided against it.
• Leonardo DiCaprio was cast as Jay Gatsby for the second collaboration with director Baz Luhrmann, following their work together on Romeo + Juliet in 1996.
• Carey Mulligan learned she had won the role of Daisy Buchanan when Luhrmann called her on the red carpet at a New York event, causing her to burst into tears.
• Tobey Maguire's casting as Nick Carraway marked his third collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio, following This Boy's Life and Don's Plum.
• Amitabh Bachchan made his Hollywood debut as Meyer Wolfshiem and worked on the film for free as a personal favor to Baz Luhrmann.

• Beacon Towers, a demolished Gold Coast mansion thought to have partly inspired Fitzgerald's depiction of Gatsby's estate, served as a main design inspiration for the film version of his mansion.
