- Frank Darabont wrote the screenplay adaptation of The Green Mile in less than eight weeks.
- The film's title comes from the green-colored floor running down the hallway where inmates walk before facing execution in the electric chair.
- Production designer Terence Marsh custom-built all interior sets and designed a bespoke electric chair inspired by actual prison models.
- Tom Hanks and director Frank Darabont first met at an Academy Award luncheon in 1994, where Stephen King suggested Hanks for the lead role.
- Makeup tests failed to make Tom Hanks look credible as an elderly man, leading to Dabbs Greer being cast as the older version of Paul Edgecomb in what became Greer's final film role.
