- Director Tate Taylor optioned the film rights to Kathryn Stockett's novel before it was even published.
- Octavia Spencer, who plays Minny in the film, actually inspired the character in Stockett's original novel and narrated the audiobook version.
- Tate Taylor convinced DreamWorks to film in Greenwood, Mississippi by presenting executives with a photo album of potential shooting locations during their first meeting.
- The Help was the most significant film production to shoot in Mississippi since O Brother, Where Art Thou? in 2000.
- Greenwood was used to stand in for 1960s-era Jackson, with the production planning to shoot approximately 95 percent of the film there.
- Scenes set at the Jackson Journal office were filmed in a Clarksdale building that had housed the Clarksdale Press Register for forty years before closing in April 2010.
