- Guillermo del Toro directed pre-production work on The Hobbit for about two years before leaving the project in May 2010 due to delays partly caused by MGM's financial troubles.
- Peter Jackson took over as director in October 2010 with minimal prep time, unfinished scripts, and no storyboards, forcing him to improvise on set during filming.
- Principal photography for The Hobbit films ran for 266 days, beginning March 21, 2011 and ending July 6, 2012 in New Zealand.
- The Battle of the Five Armies was shifted from 2012 to 2013 to allow for proper planning and shooting after other production challenges.
