- The film's concept originated in 1992 at Interscope Communications, with original writer Michael Alan Eddy later suing in 2004 claiming he was denied credit by the WGA and Warner Bros.
- Filming took place across 13 locations, primarily in New Zealand's Taranaki region, which was selected because Mount Egmont resembles Mount Fuji and provides extensive forest and farmland backdrops.
- A location manager discovered Mount Taranaki in a travel book and convinced producers to scout the region, leading to its selection as the primary New Zealand filming location.
- Tom Cruise performed his own stunts throughout the film.
