Trivia & production notes
- Tom Mankiewicz's initial script conceived Scaramanga as Bond's alter ego and equal in villainy, but this concept was largely abandoned in later drafts by Richard Maibaum.
- The Solex agitator MacGuffin was created by producer Michael G. Wilson after researching solar power, inspired by the 1973 energy crisis.
- Christopher Lee, who played Scaramanga, was Ian Fleming's step-cousin, and Fleming had once suggested Lee for Dr. No but forgot to mention it before the role went to Joseph Wiseman.
- Britt Ekland became upset when she learned Maud Adams had been cast, believing Adams was taking the main role of Mary Goodnight, but producer Broccoli then invited Ekland to play that part instead.
- Filming began in November 1973 at the wreck of the RMS Queen Elizabeth in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, which served as an MI6 base in the film.
- Ko Tapu, one of the Thai islands used as Scaramanga's hideout location, became known locally and in tourist guidebooks as 'James Bond Island' following the film's release.
- Cinematographer Oswald Morris was hired mid-production to replace Ted Moore, and accepted the role only after being convinced by producer Broccoli over dinner.
- The Golden Gun consisted of four detachable pieces—a fountain pen barrel, cigarette lighter bullet chamber, cigarette case handle, and cufflink trigger—that Christopher Lee found extremely difficult to assemble.
- The AMC Hornet X corkscrew stunt was the first of its kind to be designed and tested using computer simulation by Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory before being filmed in a single take.
- Stuntman Loren Willert completed the corkscrew jump on his first attempt and received a $30,000 bonus on the spot, though composer John Barry's added slide whistle sound effect later drew criticism for diminishing the stunt's impact.
