Trivia & production notes
- Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay and was initially set to direct The Martian, but left the project to pursue directing Sinister Six, after which Ridley Scott took over as director.
- Ridley Scott was drawn to the film because of its emphasis on science and his belief that entertainment and education could be balanced.
- Actual potatoes were grown on a sound stage adjacent to the main filming set, planted at staggered times to capture different growth stages for the scenes.
- A six-person team constructed 15 spacesuits for the film.
- The Martian was filmed using 3D cameras, with around 20 sets constructed at Korda Studios in Hungary.
- Wadi Rum in Jordan, a UNESCO world heritage site, served as the filming location for Mars exterior scenes over eight days in March 2015, and had previously been used for Mission to Mars, Red Planet, and The Last Days on Mars.
- The production team gifted a specially built Mars rover model to Jordan's Royal Automobile Museum in gratitude for filming there.
- Matt Damon and Ridley Scott drew inspiration from the documentary Touching the Void, which follows trapped mountain climbers.
- Scott's first cut of the film ran 2 hours and 45 minutes, with an extended cut released on home video containing 10 additional minutes.
- Overall filming lasted approximately 70 days.
