- Stephen Sommers declined to direct the third Mummy film, saying he felt the first two came together so well that making a third would be very difficult.
- Rachel Weisz did not return for the film, citing problems with the script and the fact that she had recently given birth.
- An early draft of the script featured Imhotep as an ally who would help the protagonists defeat the Dragon Emperor.
- The Dragon Emperor concept was inspired by the real historical Qin Shi Huang, who was buried with thousands of terracotta soldiers.
- An early script version set the story in 1940 during World War II, with Rick and Evy working as British spies in India investigating a suspected Japanese secret weapon.
- The original prologue would have featured Zi Yuan traveling to Hamunaptra to create a terracotta copy of the Book of the Dead, complete with the puzzle box key from the first film.
- A Tibetan monk character nicknamed Tequila would have joined the group in an early draft, guiding them to the Temple of Whispering Skulls.
