- Christopher Nolan chose to adapt Homer's Odyssey partly because he felt no major Hollywood studio had tackled it as a large-scale production, describing it as an odd gap in film history.
- Nolan wrote the Odyssey script in a non-linear fashion rather than following the epic's original structure.
- The Odyssey is expected to be the most expensive film of Nolan's career with a net budget of $250 million.
- Nolan was previously attached to direct Troy in the early 2000s but turned it down, later feeling he had become more qualified to adapt Homer's Odyssey after 20 years of large-scale productions.
- To depict the gods' presence realistically, Nolan chose to show natural phenomena and the characters' fear of divine actions rather than depicting the gods themselves on screen.
