• Director Chris Renaud was brought onto the project in 2012 while still completing Despicable Me 2, after CEO Chris Meledandri pitched him the core concept of depicting what pets do when their owners leave.
• The filmmakers initially considered making the story a murder mystery before settling on a more accessible narrative.
• The design team drew inspiration from cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé and deliberately created vertically-oriented environments, following the old Warner Bros. tradition of rarely showing pet owners' faces.
• All animation was produced entirely in France by Illumination Mac Guff.
• Alexandre Desplat composed the film's original score, with the soundtrack released on July 1, 2016.
• The film was originally scheduled for February 12, 2016 before being pushed back to July 8, and it premiered at the 2016 Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 16.
