Trivia & production notes
- Andrew Niccol's original script treatment, titled The Malcolm Show, was conceived as a science fiction thriller set in New York City rather than the lighter, contained world of the final film.
- Producer Scott Rudin bought the script for slightly over $1 million in fall 1993, and Paramount agreed to pay Andrew Niccol extra money to step aside so they could hire an established director instead of having him make his directorial debut.
- Peter Weir rewrote the script to be significantly funnier than Niccol's original darker version, with Niccol producing sixteen drafts before Weir felt the script was ready for filming.
- Jim Carrey agreed to take a pay cut from his usual $20 million fee to $12 million for The Truman Show, and he decided on the role faster than any other in his career.
- Peter Weir cast Jim Carrey after seeing Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, believing Carrey's comedic performance reminded him of Charlie Chaplin.
- Dennis Hopper was fired after two days of filming as Christof due to a pre-agreed clause between director Peter Weir and producer Scott Rudin that required both of them to approve his performance.
- Ed Harris stepped in to replace Dennis Hopper as Christof, pitching the idea that the character should be a hunchback, a notion that director Peter Weir rejected.
- Laura Linney studied Sears catalogs from the 1950s to develop her character's poses when preparing to play the actress pretending to be Meryl, Truman's wife.
- Filming took place over roughly four and a half months from December 1996 to April 1997, during a period when visual effects companies were transitioning to computer-generated imagery.
- The film's visual aesthetic was inspired by television commercials and advertising imagery, with interior scenes heavily lit to reinforce the idea that everything in Truman's world was for sale.
