Trivia & production notes
- Director Kenneth Branagh declined to return for the sequel immediately after the first film wrapped, telling the studio he didn't "have it" in himself to jump straight into another effects-heavy production.
- Marvel Studios initially planned for Hela to be the main villain but the Creative Committee rejected the idea, believing they couldn't market toys of a female antagonist to young boys.
- Patty Jenkins exited the project citing creative differences after designing a Romeo and Juliet-inspired story where Jane Foster would be stranded on Earth while Thor was forbidden from rescuing her.
- Alan Taylor was selected to direct the film partly because Kevin Feige wanted to bring darker, more grounded storytelling inspired by Taylor's work on Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire.
- Benedict Cumberbatch was considered to play Malekith the Accursed before the role went to Mads Mikkelsen, who then dropped out due to his commitment to the television series Hannibal.
- Zachary Levi was cast as Fandral after Joshua Dallas had to exit due to his commitment to Once Upon a Time, ironically reversing the first film where Levi had to drop out due to Chuck scheduling conflicts.
- Alan Taylor wanted to give Asgard a grittier, more Viking-influenced aesthetic rather than the shiny appearance of the first film, with more texture and weight reflecting thousands of years of history.
- Tom Hiddleston confirmed his return as Loki and expressed that his character would need to take responsibility for his actions from the first film and The Avengers.
- The film was initially scheduled for July 26, 2013, then moved to November 15, 2013, and eventually released on November 8, 2013 after being moved up another week.
- Robert Rodat was hired as a rewriter to overhaul Don Payne's script, and filming began in August 2012 in London after multiple director changes and rewrites.
