Trivia & production notes
- Michael Bay initially decided not to return for a fourth Transformers film, but Steven Spielberg convinced him to direct Age of Extinction after final negotiations.
- Age of Extinction was the first feature film shot using smaller digital IMAX 3D cameras, in addition to being shot in IMAX 70mm film, digital stereo 3-D, and various 35mm formats.
- Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz were cast as leads on three-picture contracts, meaning they were bound to appear in at least two additional Transformers films.
- Kelsey Grammer was cast as Harold Attinger, the film's primary human villain.
- Frank Welker reprised his role as Galvatron from the original Transformers television series, a character previously voiced by Leonard Nimoy in The Transformers: The Movie.
- China Movie Channel and Jiaflix Enterprises co-produced the film with Paramount, marking a significant Chinese investment in the franchise.
- Two steamships, the Columbia and Ste. Claire, which had previously operated between Detroit and an amusement park, were partially restored and used as film props during Detroit shooting.
