Trivia & production notes
- Producer Joel Silver acquired the film rights to V for Vendetta in 1988, along with Watchmen, over a decade before the movie entered production.
- The Wachowskis wrote a V for Vendetta screenplay in the mid-1990s that closely followed the graphic novel, but James McTeigue was brought in as director to revise and modernize it while the Wachowskis were finishing The Matrix sequels.
- Alan Moore disassociated himself from the film and requested his name be removed from the closing credits, citing disputes with Warner Bros. over his supposed endorsement and disagreement with how the script changed his story's political themes.
- James Purefoy was originally cast as V but left after six weeks of filming due to creative differences about how the character should be portrayed, despite earlier reports blaming difficulties with wearing the mask.
- Natalie Portman prepared for her role by working with a dialect coach to master an English accent, studying The Weather Underground, and reading the autobiography of Menachem Begin.
- Director James McTeigue first met Natalie Portman while working as an assistant director on Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.
- Filming was done in London and at Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam, Germany, with the abandoned Aldwych tube station used for the Underground scenes.
- The production had to close the security-sensitive area from Trafalgar Square to Parliament for three nights to film the final scene at Westminster, marking the first time the government allowed such a closure.
- Hugo Weaving's entire dialogue was re-recorded in post-production because the V mask muffled his voice during filming.
- V for Vendetta was the final film shot by cinematographer Adrian Biddle, who died of a heart attack in December 2005, months after production wrapped.
