Trivia & production notes
- Disney bought the film rights to Gary K. Wolf's novel shortly after its 1981 publication, but Robert Zemeckis was rejected as director because his previous two films were box-office failures.
- The original budget of $50 million was deemed too expensive, so Disney greenlit the project only after it was reduced to $30 million, which would have still made it the most expensive animated film ever produced at that time.
- Steven Spielberg negotiated with Warner Bros., Fleischer Studios, and other studios to allow their characters to appear in the film, but the companies stipulated how those characters could be portrayed.
- Warner Bros. objected to animators using Bob Clampett's design for Daffy Duck, so Zemeckis had separate artists create Daffy with Chuck Jones' design to satisfy the studio while still using Clampett's version in the final film.
- King Features Syndicate demanded $50,000 just for a brief Koko the Clown cameo, so animators redesigned the character with Bozo-style hair instead of his hat to sidestep the licensing issue.
- Terry Gilliam was offered the chance to direct but declined, later admitting the technical demands felt like too much work and saying he completely regretted the decision.
- Harrison Ford was Spielberg's first choice to play Eddie Valiant, but his asking price was too high, and Chevy Chase was second choice before declining.
- Eddie Murphy rejected the role of Eddie Valiant because the concept of "toons" sounded ridiculous to him, a decision he later deeply regretted.
- Charles Fleischer created Roger Rabbit's lisp and stammering "P-p-p-please" catchphrase as a tribute to cartoon characters with speech impediments, inspired by Huntz Hall's character in The Bowery Boys.
- Richard Williams designed Roger Rabbit as a visual combination of multiple cartoon influences including Tex Avery's head shape, Droopy's hair, Goofy's overalls, Porky Pig's bow tie, Mickey Mouse's gloves, and Bugs Bunny's cheeks and ears.
