Trivia & production notes
- Early development attempts at an X-Men film included one in 1984 by Marvel writers Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas when Orion Pictures held the rights, but the project stalled when Orion faced financial troubles.
- In the late 1980s, James Cameron was set to produce an X-Men film with director Kathryn Bigelow, but the deal fell apart after Stan Lee pitched Cameron on Spider-Man instead.
- Fox purchased the X-Men film rights in 1994 after being impressed by the success of the animated X-Men television series.
- An early script by Michael Chabon in 1996 focused heavily on Wolverine and Jubilee and proposed that villains wouldn't appear until the second film.
- Bryan Singer initially declined to direct X-Men, viewing it as beneath his ambitions after The Usual Suspects, but changed his mind after producer Tom DeSanto explained the film's themes about prejudice and discrimination.
- Joss Whedon performed a major overhaul of the X-Men script, including adding a scene where Jean Grey appears as the Phoenix, but his version was rejected for its comedic tone and only two lines of his dialogue made it to the final film.
- Fox initially demanded cuts to the script including removal of Beast, Nightcrawler, Pyro, and the Danger Room before greenlighting the film, with the budget projected at $75 million.
- Russell Crowe was Bryan Singer's first choice for Wolverine but turned down the role to make Gladiator, while recommending his friend Hugh Jackman as a replacement.
- Hugh Jackman was initially rejected for the Wolverine role for being too tall, despite Russell Crowe's recommendation.
- Dougray Scott was cast as Wolverine in a multi-film deal but was forced to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts with Mission: Impossible.
