Trivia & production notes
- Bryan Singer abandoned the project in July 2004 to direct Superman Returns, saying he had only a partial story outline for X-Men 3 but a fully formed vision for Superman.
- The original treatment for the film included Emma Frost as a villain manipulating Jean Grey's emotions, with the role written for Sigourney Weaver.
- Matthew Vaughn was hired as director and made casting choices including Kelsey Grammer as Beast, but withdrew before filming started due to family issues and frustration with Fox's tight deadlines.
- Multiple acclaimed directors turned down the job: Guillermo del Toro (committed to Pan's Labyrinth), Joss Whedon (working on Wonder Woman), Zack Snyder (committed to 300), and Alex Proyas (citing feuds with Fox's president).
- Brett Ratner replaced Vaughn as director in June 2005, despite previously thinking he had no chance to direct a comic book film after his Superman: Flyby was canceled.
- Writers Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn completed the first eighty pages in their opening week, but an incomplete draft was leaked to Ain't It Cool News, which published a negative review of it.
- The writers wanted both The Dark Phoenix Saga and the Whedon-written X-Men story Gifted to anchor the film, but Fox executives pushed them to focus on the cure plot, worried the Phoenix story was too dark for mainstream audiences.
- Gambit was written out of the film because the writers felt they could not give the fan-favorite character enough screentime to do him justice, despite considering him for multiple scenes.
- Nightcrawler was cut from the film partly because actor Alan Cumming had complained about the grueling prosthetic makeup process in X2, making the extended makeup work uneconomical for a minimal role.
- Cyclops was killed on-screen at Fox's insistence because James Marsden was unavailable, having been cast in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns.
