Trivia & production notes
- Zak Penn convinced Bryan Singer to skip the Dark Phoenix Saga storyline, arguing the franchise needed more time to establish its universe before introducing cosmic elements.
- Screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris turned down the chance to write Urban Legends: Bloody Mary in order to work on rewrites for X2.
- Beast and Angel were both included in early drafts but cut because the film had too many characters; Angel was originally conceived as a victim of Stryker's experiments who would transform into Archangel.
- Bryan Singer rewrote the character who became Lady Deathstrike from a minor figure named Anne Reynolds into a more prominent mutant combatant.
- Halle Berry received additional rewrites to expand her screentime following her Academy Award win for Monster's Ball.
- A fully constructed Danger Room set with a rotating propeller control room was built but abandoned due to budget constraints.
- Singer kept Jean Grey's self-sacrifice ending secret from actress Famke Janssen until the middle of filming.
- Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen needed a Canadian grandmaster brought to set for a day to advise them on how to play chess for their Xavier and Lehnsherr scene.
- Hugh Jackman's stunt double James Bamford was asked to play Gambit in a cameo after an injury ended his doubling work, but the scene was removed from the final cut.
- The original cut received an R rating due to violent shots in the X-Mansion attack sequence, and Fox trimmed several seconds to secure a PG-13 rating.
