Trivia & production notes
- The concept for 24 originated from executive producer Joel Surnow's idea of a television series with 24 one-hour episodes taking place over a single day, which producer Robert Cochran initially dismissed as "the worst idea I've ever heard."
- Fox immediately purchased the pilot after it was pitched to them, believing the series would "move the form of television forward."
- The series premiere was scheduled for October 30, 2001, but was postponed to November 6 due to the September 11 attacks.
- The CTU set was initially constructed in a Fox Sports office, then recreated in a studio in Woodland Hills after the series was picked up for a full season.
- 24 does not use slow motion techniques or flashbacks, with only one exception during the first-season finale, in order to maintain the real-time format of the narrative.
- Split screens originated from the high volume of phone calls in the show and were used to trace parallel adventures of different characters while helping viewers follow where to focus their attention.
- The running digital clock that appears before and after commercial breaks was created at Joel Surnow's insistence so audiences would always know the current time in the show's fictional timeline.
- When the running clock is displayed full screen, it is accompanied by an alternating pulsating beeping noise resembling a time bomb, though a silent clock is occasionally used following the death of a major character.
- A proposed crossover film titled Die Hard 24/7 was planned to unite the 24 and Die Hard franchises with Kiefer Sutherland reprising his role alongside Bruce Willis, but the project never materialized.
- The planned 24 feature film was originally intended for the hiatus between seasons six and seven, but was rescheduled to begin after the eighth season concluded, with the screenplay to be written by Billy Ray.
