Trivia & production notes
- Justin Hartley declined to spin off his Green Arrow character from Smallville into its own series, wanting to respect the show's five-season legacy and not overshadow it.
- A Justice League spin-off featuring Oliver Queen was developed early on with Stephen S. DeKnight set to helm it, before DeKnight later became showrunner for Marvel's Daredevil.
- David Nutter, who directed the Smallville pilot, was brought in to direct the Arrow pilot as well.
- The creative team intentionally cast a new actor rather than continuing with Justin Hartley's portrayal to establish Arrow as its own separate continuity from Smallville.
- Arrow was designed without super-powered heroes and villains initially, a choice made partly to present a more realistic take on the characters.
- The show's Starling City skyline uses footage from Frankfurt, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston, and Tokyo combined together.
- During the first five seasons, every episode featured dual storylines with flashbacks to Oliver's time on the island, requiring Stephen Amell to wear a wig and have his appearance altered for the past timeline scenes.
- Filming of island flashback scenes takes place in Vancouver's Whytecliff Park near beachfront homes, requiring extensive planning to keep residential buildings out of frame.
- Stephen Amell requested to leave the show at the end of season seven, but the producers decided to end the series with a shortened tenth-episode final season instead of continuing without him.
- The creative team drew inspiration from Christopher Nolan's Batman films when developing Arrow, deciding to be ambitious with storytelling rather than holding back week to week.
