Trivia & production notes
- Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould initially considered making Better Call Saul a half-hour comedy where Saul would meet various celebrity clients in his office, similar to the format of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, but abandoned the idea because they couldn't figure out how to write for that structure.
- Gilligan imagined Breaking Bad as 25 percent humor and 75 percent drama, and speculated they would reverse those proportions for Better Call Saul, though the show ultimately turned out to be 85 percent drama and 15 percent comedy according to Bob Odenkirk.
- Gilligan and Gould initially thought Saul Goodman wasn't substantial enough to carry an entire show by himself, but eventually realized the story should focus on how Jimmy McGill became that character rather than rushing to transform him.
- The writers spent time observing actual cases at Los Angeles Superior Court to research how courtrooms work, discovering that much of the activity consists of waiting and downtime rather than dramatic moments.
- Rhea Seehorn's performance as Kim Wexler in the first season impressed the writers so much that they decided to expand the Jimmy-Kim relationship starting in season two and slow down Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman for the rest of the series.
- A writer was assigned at the start of each season to rewatch all 62 episodes of Breaking Bad to ensure the Better Call Saul scripts didn't contradict anything from the original show.
- Vince Gilligan left the Better Call Saul writing staff during season three, and this departure had been planned since the show's debut, with Peter Gould taking over as sole showrunner.
- Gilligan stepped back to work as a director-for-hire during seasons four and five, directing one episode per season while having little involvement in script development.
- For the sixth and final season, Peter Gould brought Vince Gilligan back to the writers' room so they could finish the show they started together.
- Michael Mando's character Nacho Varga had been mentioned in the Breaking Bad episode titled "Better Call Saul" but was never actually seen on screen until the spinoff series.
