Trivia & production notes
- Charlie Brooker created Black Mirror after completing the zombie drama Dead Set and drew inspiration from The Twilight Zone, Tales of the Unexpected, and Hammer House of Horror, all of which featured standalone stories rather than recurring casts.
- The series title refers to the blank screen of an electronic device when powered off, inspired by an Arcade Fire song of the same name.
- Brooker based his approach on how Rod Serling used The Twilight Zone to address controversial contemporary issues like racism by placing them in fictional settings to evade television censors.
- Charlie Brooker wrote most Black Mirror episodes, often originating from conversations with executive producer Annabel Jones about worst-case scenarios involving new technology.
- For the first two series, Brooker planned minimally and wrote scripts on the go, leading to dropped subplots and multiple rewrites of the episode White Bear.
- San Junipero was the first episode written for Netflix and was a conscious experiment to shift the tonal direction of Black Mirror, after which episodes became more tonally diverse.
- Brooker would sometimes write standing up to discourage time-wasting and referred to his first drafts as vomit drafts that had to be written despite being terrible.
- On Nosedive, Michael Schur wrote the first half of the script and Rashida Jones wrote the second half, working from a story outline and ideas provided by Brooker.
- Miley Cyrus released the song On a Roll under her character name Ashley O from the episode Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, and it was based on Nine Inch Nails' Head Like a Hole, charting in multiple countries.
- Soundtracks from 12 of Black Mirror's 23 episodes have been released on streaming services, with the Hang the DJ soundtrack credited to Alex Somers and featuring Sigur Rós also released on vinyl.
