• Screenwriter Park Ji-eun spent 11 years developing the series after being inspired by a 2008 incident in which a South Korean actress accidentally drifted into North Korean waters while boating near Incheon.
• The original script had the protagonist crossing the border by water, but Park changed it to a paragliding accident to avoid similarities with the films North Korean Guys and The Net, after military and aviation experts informed her that paragliders are radar-evasive unlike motorized aircraft.
• The production team interviewed North Korean refugees from diverse backgrounds including defectors, smugglers, soldiers' wives, and Ministry of State Security personnel to ensure accurate portrayal of life in North Korea.
• The series drew thematic inspiration from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and The Little Prince, using the motif that "sometimes the wrong train takes you to the right station."
• Hyun Bin trained in North Korean dialect for several months and underwent physical training to prepare for his role as Ri Jeong-hyeok.
• Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin reunited for Crash Landing on You, marking their second collaboration after the 2018 film The Negotiation.
