• Marc Cherry conceived the series after watching a news report about Andrea Yates with his mother.
• Before Desperate Housewives, Cherry had created three sitcoms that each lasted less than a year: The 5 Mrs. Buchanans, The Crew, and Some of My Best Friends.
• Six major networks—HBO, CBS, NBC, Fox, Showtime, and Lifetime—rejected the show before ABC executives Lloyd Braun and Susan Lyne greenlit it.
• ABC executives suggested alternative titles like Wisteria Lane and The Secret Lives of Housewives before settling on Desperate Housewives.
• The show was announced as being created by both Charles Pratt Jr. of Melrose Place and Marc Cherry, though Pratt only served as executive producer for the pilot episode.
• The Wisteria Lane set, filmed on Universal Studios Hollywood's back lot and called Colonial Street by crews, has been used since the mid-1940s for productions including Psycho, Gremlins, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
• In the second season, a church facade and mansion were removed from the Wisteria Lane set to make room for Edie's house and a park.
• Danny Elfman composed the opening theme and won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music in 2005.
• Steve Jablonsky, who scored from the fourth episode of the first season onward, creates the show's underscore using electronic-based composition with live string ensembles.
• The final season was shot digitally on the Arri Alexa, while all previous seasons used Panavision 35 mm cameras.
