Trivia & production notes
- The Gossip Girl novels were initially slated to become a film starring Lindsay Lohan with Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, but when that project stalled, producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz converted it into a television series.
- Josh Schwartz expressed concern about repeating the formula of his previous show The O.C., noting that the source material's smart, worldly characters offered a different direction.
- Penn Badgley originally auditioned for the role of Chuck Bass but turned it down at first, later accepting the role of Dan Humphrey instead.
- Blake Lively initially declined the role of Serena van der Woodsen because she planned to attend college.
- British actor Ed Westwick was first asked to read for Nate Archibald before being offered the role of Chuck Bass.
- Kristen Bell secured the narration role of Gossip Girl by calling CW executive Dawn Ostroff and requesting it based on her experience doing narration work on Veronica Mars.
- Mischa Barton turned down the recurring role of Georgina Sparks, which was subsequently offered to Michelle Trachtenberg.
- The show's producers initially considered shooting in a Los Angeles studio with a recreated Central Park but chose to film the entire series in New York City itself to capture the city as a character and provide a fresh perspective on the city from teenagers' viewpoints.
- The fictional Constance Billard-St. Jude's School used external shots of the Museum of the City of New York, with the school's design based on author Cecily von Ziegesar's own alma mater, Nightingale-Bamford.
- The fourth season's premiere episodes were filmed in Paris, including locations such as La Sorbonne, the Musée d'Orsay, and Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
