- Miley Cyrus auditioned against over 1,000 applicants for the lead role when she was eleven years old, but was initially rejected for being too young and lacking professional experience.
- After six months of continued rejection, Gary Marsh, the president of Disney Channels Worldwide, asked the twelve-year-old Cyrus to audition again, and she was ultimately cast in the role.
- The lead character was originally named Chloe Stewart, but was changed to Miley Stewart after Miley Cyrus was cast to avoid confusion about the show's premise.
- Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley's real-life father, was only asked to audition after his daughter had already been cast in the series.
- Billy Ray Cyrus was initially hesitant about joining the show because he worried he might ruin his daughter's project and suggested hiring a professional actor instead.
