- Kevin Spacey's previous regular television role was in Wiseguy, which ended in 1990, more than two decades before House of Cards.
- Director David Fincher told the entire main cast at their first read-through that each of them was his first choice for their role.
- Robin Wright was approached by Fincher to join House of Cards after they had worked together on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
- Kate Mara asked her sister Rooney, who had worked with Fincher on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, to recommend her for the role of Zoe Barnes.
- Most interior scenes for House of Cards were filmed in a warehouse in Joppa, Maryland, which housed full-scale reconstructions of the West Wing, Oval Office, and Congressional spaces.
- The show used a three-sided green screen set inside a stationary car with synchronized LED screens above it to film all driving scenes, with the actors remaining in place while video footage of Washington, D.C. streets played on the LED panels.
- Russia vetoed the show's plans to film in the UN Security Council chamber in June 2014, though the production was able to film elsewhere in the UN Building.
- Maryland provided the production with $11.6 million in tax credits for season one, during which nearly 2,200 people were hired and over 1,800 Maryland businesses were involved.
