- George R. R. Martin pitched a House of the Dragon concept to HBO in 2015 while Game of Thrones was still being produced, with the idea becoming a straight-to-series order by October 2019.
- Miguel Sapochnik, who directed the Game of Thrones episode "Battle of the Bastards," was selected as co-showrunner alongside Ryan Condal.
