• The series originated from a pilot for a different show called Bits and Pieces that featured a blended family, but Disney decided to pivot the concept to focus on twins instead.
• Rather than recasting when they changed the concept from a blended family to twins, the producers kept the existing cast and simply reshot the pilot with Dove Cameron playing dual roles.
• The Rooney family name was chosen for the show because one of the creators enjoyed the Pittsburgh Steelers, an NFL team owned by the Rooney family.
• Cozi Zuehlsdorff was initially cast in a lead role but was later downgraded to guest star status.
• The theme song "Better in Stereo" was recorded by Dove Cameron and released as a promotional single on October 15, 2013, with a music video airing on Disney Channel two weeks later.
• The show's final season was retitled Liv and Maddie: Cali Style and premiered on September 23, 2016.
• A full Liv and Maddie soundtrack was released on March 17, 2015, containing songs performed throughout the series.
• John D. Beck and Ron Hart, the creators of Liv and Maddie, previously worked together as a writing team on According to Jim, Hey Arnold!, and Shake It Up!.
