Trivia & production notes
- Jack was originally written to die in the pilot and the role was intended for Michael Keaton, but ABC executives insisted the character survive.
- Josh Holloway's audition for Sawyer made such an impression—he reportedly kicked a chair when he forgot his lines—that producers rewrote the character to match his energy and southern accent.
- Dominic Monaghan auditioned for Sawyer, but his performance was so well-received that producers created the character of Charlie around him instead.
- Yunjin Kim auditioned for Kate, but producers wrote the separate characters of Sun and Jin for her and Daniel Dae Kim instead, making them husband and wife.
- Michael Emerson was initially contracted for just three episodes as Ben in season two, but his performance earned him an extension to eight episodes and eventually a role throughout season three and beyond.
- Lost's two-part pilot cost between $10 and $14 million, making it the most expensive pilot in ABC's history at the time, compared to an average hour-long pilot cost of $4 million in 2005.
- J.J. Abrams created the show's iconic opening sound and title card, which were inspired by The Twilight Zone.
- Lloyd Braun conceived Lost while on vacation in Hawaii in 2003 as a blend of the film Cast Away, the reality show Survivor, and Gilligan's Island with Lord of the Flies elements.
- Most of Lost was filmed on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, with urban areas in and around Honolulu doubling as locations around the world including Paris, Berlin, Sydney, and Iraq.
- Cave scenes in the first season were filmed on a sound stage built inside a Xerox parts warehouse in Hawaii that had been vacant since a mass shooting there in 1999.
