- Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan conceived the show by sharing personal stories about their families and realized the anecdotes could form the basis for a mockumentary-style comedy.
- The original pilot concept included a fictitious Dutch filmmaker character named Geert Floortje who would run the camera crew, but producers scrapped this element before the series was greenlit.
- Lloyd and Levitan pitched Modern Family to CBS and NBC before ABC, deliberately avoiding Fox due to problems they had with the network over a previous comedy called Back to You.
- CBS rejected the pitch because they were not ready to commit to single-camera filming, while NBC passed after already producing two other mockumentary-style shows.
- ABC ordered 13 episodes after the pilot tested positively with focus groups and added the show to its fall 2009 lineup days before the official schedule announcement.
- Beginning with season two, co-creators Lloyd and Levitan stopped working as a team and instead ran the show separately, each supervising half the episodes to avoid wasting time debating each other.
