Trivia & production notes
- ABC originally conceived Monk as a police procedural featuring a character with OCD inspired by Inspector Clouseau, and wanted Michael Richards for the lead role before he turned it down.
- Creator Andy Breckman drew from Sherlock Holmes when developing the show, modeling Dr. Kroger after Doctor Watson and eventually crafting Captain Stottlemeyer as an Inspector Lestrade analogue.
- Despite ABC conceiving and developing Monk, the network handed the series off to USA Network before it aired, making it the first Touchstone Television production on USA Network instead of ABC.
- The pilot episode was shot in Vancouver with San Francisco location work, but subsequent first-season episodes moved to Toronto, and later seasons two through six were primarily filmed in the Los Angeles area.
- Jeff Beal's jazzy instrumental theme for season one won the 2003 Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
- Randy Newman's season two theme "It's a Jungle Out There" received mixed reactions, with at least one major newspaper review wishing the show would revert to the original theme.
- Randy Newman won the 2004 Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for "It's a Jungle Out There" and later won a 2010 Emmy for the final episode's original song "When I'm Gone."
- USA Network moved Monk to an earlier 9:00 pm time slot in season five to serve as a lead-in for Psych, marking the show's first time change after four seasons at 10:00 pm.
- When NBC aired Monk starting in April 2008, the network used it alongside Psych to boost scripted programming as its own production ramped back up following the writers' strike.
- Colter Rule was hired by USA Network to perform all radio and TV promotional voiceovers for Monk from the series' inception, with his ironic and understated delivery contributing to the show's early popularity.
