Trivia & production notes
- The show was originally titled 'Navy NCIS' for its entire first season, a redundant name since the N in NCIS stands for Naval, chosen by CBS despite creator Donald P. Bellisario's objections.
- Bellisario wanted to keep the simpler title because he thought the longer name would confuse viewers with the similarly-named CSI franchise, a problem the show itself joked about in its pilot episode.
- Starting in season two, the show introduced 'phoofs'—two-second black-and-white clips shown at the beginning of each commercial break that replay the final moments of the previous segment.
- Creator Donald P. Bellisario stepped down in 2007 following a disagreement with star Mark Harmon, transferring his showrunner duties to Chas Floyd Johnson and Shane Brennan.
- Gary Glasberg, who became the show's day-to-day runner in 2009, died unexpectedly in his sleep in September 2016 at age 50.
- A 2009 official soundtrack featured the show's original theme by Numeriklab and a Ministry remix, plus songs by cast members Pauley Perrette and Coté de Pablo.
- An Ubisoft video game adaptation released in 2011 was widely panned by critics and players, receiving just 2/10 on GameSpot.
- Production suspended on January 8, 2025 due to Southern California wildfires but resumed four days later on January 13.
- The show's first soundtrack was released by CBS Records on February 10, 2009 as a two-disc, 22-track set featuring artists from upcoming episodes.
- In 2011, NCIS was voted America's favorite television show in an online Harris poll.
