- The original cast was nicknamed the "Not Ready for Prime-Time Players," a term created by writer Herb Sargent.
- Much of the talent involved in Saturday Night Live's first season, including head writer Michael O'Donoghue, came from The National Lampoon Radio Hour.
- Photographer Edie Baskin created the show's opening title sequence by photographing New York City at night and suggested that hosts be photographed for commercial bumpers instead of using existing publicity photos, establishing a tradition that continues today.
- For the first five seasons, Edie Baskin drew neon and pastel colors directly onto black-and-white bumper photos of hosts and backgrounds.
- Mary Ellen Matthews has been Saturday Night Live's official photographer since 1999, often photographing hosts and musical guests on a compressed schedule with makeshift studios created on-site at 30 Rock.
