Trivia & production notes
- Tollin/Robbins Productions first pitched the concept as a Batman origin story, but Warner Bros. opted to develop Batman as a film instead and chose to pursue Superman for television.
- Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar imposed a 'no tights, no flights' rule, preventing Clark Kent from flying or wearing the Superman suit throughout the series.
- Chloe Sullivan was created specifically for the series rather than adapted from existing Superman comics.
- Gough and Millar deliberately approached the Superman mythology as non-comic book fans, believing their unfamiliarity would give them an unbiased perspective on the material.
- The show was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, instead of its originally planned location in Australia, primarily because Vancouver offered a better Middle America landscape.
- Templeton Secondary School was used to film Smallville High interiors, and the production painted so much of the school in red and yellow that the institution officially adopted those colors as its school colors.
- The Kent farm was a working farm in Aldergrove owned by the Anderlinis, whose home was painted yellow specifically for the show.
- The cinematography used different color schemes and camera techniques based on Clark's emotional state—warm earth tones when safe at home, cold lighting and handheld cameras when in danger.
- After seven seasons, Gough and Millar departed in April 2008 and were replaced as showrunners by Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, Kelly Souders, and Brian Peterson.
- In 2010, Gough, Millar, and Tollin/Robbins Productions sued Warner Bros. and The CW over profits, claiming vertical integration and undervaluation of foreign distribution rights cost them millions, settling the case undisclosed in 2013.
