- Gene Roddenberry signed a three-year program-development contract with Desilu Productions in April 1964 after presenting the Star Trek concept to the studio's director of production, Herbert F. Solow.
- NBC rejected the first pilot, "The Cage," calling it "too cerebral," but made the unusual decision to fund a second pilot rather than abandon the project.
- Only Leonard Nimoy's Spock and Majel Barrett were retained from the first pilot when production moved forward with the second pilot and series.
- In February 1966, before the first episode aired, Desilu Productions nearly canceled Star Trek due to the financial burden of producing two expensive hour-long shows, but Herbert F. Solow convinced Lucille Ball to continue the series.
- Art director Matt Jefferies designed the starship Enterprise and its interiors, with his contributions honored by naming the equipment shafts in Star Trek the "Jefferies tubes."
- Prop designer Wah Chang created the flip-open communicator, which is often credited with influencing the design of portable cellular telephones.
- Despite mixed critical reviews and predictions from Variety that the show "won't work," Star Trek won its time slot in the first week with a 40.6 share.
