Trivia & production notes
- Michael Shanks was cast as Daniel Jackson because he performed what the producers considered a perfect imitation of James Spader, who played the character in the original Stargate film.
- When Michael Shanks departed after Season 5 due to feeling underutilized, Corin Nemec was offered the role of Jonas Quinn after casting agents randomly encountered him in the courtyard of MGM's Santa Monica offices.
- Claudia Black's chemistry with Michael Shanks was so well-received that she was brought back for a six-episode story arc in Season 9 to cover Amanda Tapping's maternity leave, despite initially being unavailable due to prior Farscape commitments.
- The real Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station eventually installed a fake high-security door labeled 'Stargate Command' on a storage closet containing brooms and detergent to manage visitor questions sparked by the fictional show.
- Production designer Richard Hudolin found the original Stargate prop from the feature film severely deteriorated and stored outside in the California desert, then took a detailed mold to create an improved version for the series that could turn, lock its chevrons, and be computer-controlled.
- A portable Stargate prop built for on-location filming required six workers and an entire day to set up, prompting producers to use computer-generated versions in later seasons as a faster and cheaper alternative.
- The SGC set and all pilot episode sets were constructed in just six weeks during January and February 1997, incorporating original set pieces from the Stargate feature film.
- Episode production time decreased from 7.5 working days in early seasons to a targeted average of six working days in later seasons, while the budget per episode increased from $1.3 million to approximately $2 million by Season 10.
- The first three seasons were filmed on 16mm film except for visual effects shots, but after testing with the Season 3 finale, the show switched entirely to 35mm film beginning with Season 4.
- Digital HD cameras were introduced for filming starting with Season 8.
