- AMC ordered a pilot for The Walking Dead based solely on the strength of the source comic material, the television scripts, and Frank Darabont's involvement, without waiting to see the finished pilot episode.
- The entire first season of six episodes was officially ordered before filming began in May 2010.
- Steven Yeun, who played Glenn Rhee from the pilot through season seven, was told about his character's death a year in advance but had to keep it secret.
