Trivia & production notes
- Mark Frost and David Lynch met while working on an unproduced screenplay for a Marilyn Monroe film titled Venus Descending, based on the book Goddess.
- Lynch's agent convinced him to create a television show by taking him to a restaurant and suggesting he adapt his cinematic vision of America to the small screen, which led Lynch and Frost to develop Twin Peaks.
- The show was originally going to be set in North Dakota and titled North Dakota, but the creators changed the location to Washington's Pacific Northwest after realizing the state lacked the necessary forests and mountains.
- The central image of a body washing up on a lake shore came before the characters, and was inspired in part by the unsolved 1908 murder of Hazel Irene Drew in Sand Lake, New York.
- Lynch and Frost pitched Twin Peaks to ABC during a 1988 Writers Guild strike with only a ten-minute meeting and no more than a single image and a concept, yet the network ordered the pilot.
- The pilot episode was shot for $4 million with a clause requiring the filmmakers to create an alternate ending that could be sold as a feature film in Europe if the TV series was not picked up.
- Isabella Rossellini was originally cast as an Italian character but dropped out before filming, leading the creators to reconceive the role as Josie Packard and cast Joan Chen in the part.
- Sheryl Lee was initially hired as an unknown local Seattle girl to play the dead body of Laura Palmer, but Lynch realized she had exceptional talent while filming a home movie scene with her, making her a semi-regular cast member in flashbacks and as Maddy Ferguson.
- Set dresser Frank Silva was accidentally cast as the mysterious character Bob when Lynch spotted his reflection in a mirror during filming of Sarah Palmer's vision scene and decided to use the footage creatively.
- The character Denise Bryson, a transgender FBI agent introduced in season two, became a cult icon in the LGBTQ+ community after Lynch's character delivered the line telling transphobic colleagues to 'fix their hearts or die.'
