Trivia & production notes
- Michael Jackson secretly recorded an entire original soundtrack for the film in hopes of landing the role of Willy Wonka, but Warner Bros. deemed him unmarketable as the lead in a family film and offered to buy the songs instead, which Jackson rejected.
- Johnny Depp based Willy Wonka's exaggerated bob haircut and sunglasses on Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
- Johnny Depp modeled Willy Wonka's distinctive voice on how he imagined George W. Bush would sound if he were high on drugs.
- Tim Burton and Johnny Depp drew inspiration for Willy Wonka's character from children's television show hosts like Captain Kangaroo's Bob Keeshan, Mr. Rogers, and game show hosts rather than from the 1971 film version.
- Dwayne Johnson was Tim Burton's second choice to play Willy Wonka if Johnny Depp had been unavailable.
- Freddie Highmore deliberately avoided watching the 1971 film adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory until after Burton's production wrapped, to ensure his portrayal would not be influenced by Gene Wilder's performance.
- The production spent over a decade in development hell after Warner Bros. acquired the rights in 1998, primarily because Roald Dahl's widow and daughter insisted on final approval over all casting, director, and writing decisions.
- Screenwriter Scott Frank left the project in 2001 due to scheduling conflicts with Minority Report and The Lookout, despite both Warner Bros. and the Dahl estate requesting he stay on.
- Martin Scorsese was briefly attached to direct the film in April 2002 but chose to make The Aviator instead.
- Johnny Depp suggested Freddie Highmore for the role of Charlie Bucket after having worked with him on Finding Neverland.
