- Michael Jackson secretly recorded an entire original soundtrack for the film in hopes of landing the role of Willy Wonka, but Warner Bros. deemed him unmarketable as the lead in a family film and offered to buy the songs instead, which Jackson rejected.
- Johnny Depp based Willy Wonka's exaggerated bob haircut and sunglasses on Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
- Johnny Depp modeled Willy Wonka's distinctive voice on how he imagined George W. Bush would sound if he were high on drugs.
