- Scott Derrickson left the director's chair in January 2020 due to creative differences, having conceived a story that diverged from Marvel's vision before even writing a screenplay draft.
- Sam Raimi initially hesitated to direct another Marvel film after the mixed reception to Spider-Man 3, but took the job partly because he was a fan of the Doctor Strange character.
